Peace and justice group to celebrate 25 years

By Tom Eblen teblen@herald-leader.com

The Central Kentucky Council for Peace and Justice is celebrating its 25th anniversary with a series of events throughout Central Kentucky called 20 Days for Peace and Justice.

Group leaders considered raising money to bring in a big-name speaker for the anniversary but decided instead to highlight the 35 local organizations affiliated with the council.

"We want to bring attention to all the progressive groups that are doing good work," said organizer Rosie Moosnick.

The council works on social justice and global community issues. Many people are familiar with it because of the weekly vigils downtown against the Iraq war.

When the war began, vigil participants were often met with public hostility. That has changed as the war has gone on.

"Then, you were seen as unpatriotic," Moosnick said. "Now, there has been such a shift in sentiment. People are much more open than in the past."
