CINCINNATI . Bigger-than-life banners greeted Cincinnati Reds fans entering the box seats behind home plate this season. The most prominent one showed Ken Griffey Jr. and Adam Dunn, running side-by-side with bemused smiles on their faces.

At mid-season, both players were gone. A few weeks later, so were the banners.

Time to start over. Again.
By trading Griffey and Dunn, the Reds showed they're ready for a makeover during their eighth straight losing season.

CINCINNATI . Prince Fielder made amends by apologizing, then hit a two-run homer Tuesday night that helped the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Cincinnati Reds 8-1 and quickly move beyond their ugly altercation in the dugout.

The Brewers were on their best behavior a day after Fielder shoved pitcher Manny Parra in the dugout during a series-opening loss. Fielder apologized before the game on Tuesday, then helped Milwaukee's uptight offense relax by hitting his sixth homer in his last nine games.

Right-hander Dave Bush (6-9) was among those who pulled Fielder away from Parra on Monday night, and he ended up pinned underneath the bulky first baseman and several teammates. One night later, he was on top of his game.

Bush allowed only three hits in seven innings, retiring 17 consecutive batters after Edwin Encarnacion drove in a run with an infield single in the first inning. It was a breakthrough performance for Bush, who was 0-2 with a 14.24 ERA in five previous starts at Great American Ball Park.

WASHINGTON . Pete Orr picked up his first RBI in more than 15 months, slapping a pinch-hit, two-run single into left field in the seventh inning Saturday night to put the Washington Nationals ahead to stay in a 10-6 win over the Cincinnati Reds.

.If you don't think you can do it, you shouldn't be here, that's for sure,. said Orr, who increased his RBI output to a grand total of 20 in 399 career at-bats over four big-league seasons. .You have to believe in yourself, first of all. It was a fun situation to be in, and I'm happy I got the opportunity..

Orr's single capped a four-run inning and gave the Nationals something they haven't had since June . a two-game winning streak at home. Washington had dropped nine straight overall before beating the Reds on Friday; now they'll be going for the series sweep on Sunday.

The Nationals fell behind 5-2 in the second inning and rallied while the Reds unraveled. Cincinnati committed three errors, and the bullpen allowed seven runs over 22.3 innings.

Oswalt came off the disabled list and struck out five in the Houston Astros' 5-4 win over the Reds on Monday night.

Oswalt (8-8) won his fifth straight start against Cincinnati and improved to 20-1 in 25 career outings against them, despite giving up a grand slam to Adam Dunn. The Houston ace threw 74 pitches in his first start since aggravating a left hip injury on July 11. He went on the DL on July 19.

He was hoping to throw 80-85 pitches, but felt fatigued by the end of the fifth. .There wasn't a whole lot of sense to go out there and maybe face one batter and come out,. Oswalt said. .We decided the fifth inning was enough..

NEW YORK . He's working on his 20th season now in the big leagues, and he's not what he was. But Ken Griffey Jr. still has that sweeping home-run swing and he still has a terrific hold on people's imagination. He stepped up to the plate in the sixth inning Sunday at Yankee Stadium just as the sky was darkening and the wind started whipping. A game-delaying cloudburst was about to cut loose and something striking, something right out of the movies, happened in the rapidly dimming light.

For the first time all afternoon, it was possible to see the camera flashes firing . dozens of them . when Griffey stepped to the plate.
Griffey ended up coaxing a walk that time up. But in his next at-bat in the eighth, he turned on a fat pitch from Yankees reliever Kyle Farnsworth and lined home run No. 601 of his career sneaking just over the right-field fence, and this time, fans didn't just take photos. Knowing the 38-year-old Griffey might never be back for a regular-season game in Yankee Stadium, they gave him a standing ovation that coaxed a little wave from him once back in the dugout.
Asked later if he thought the fans were saying goodbye to him, Griffey said, .Nah. No. No..

CINCINNATI . It's fodder for a barroom argument: Who made out better when the Texas Rangers traded Edinson Volquez and Danny Herrera to the Reds for outfielder Josh Hamilton?

So far, the Dec. 21, 2007, deal has been great for both teams. Hamilton is a Triple Crown candidate in Texas, while Volquez is 9-2 with a 1.64 ERA. He's been a lights-out, front-of-the-rotation pitcher, who is only 24 years old. Meanwhile, Hamilton, 27, is batting .319 with 18 homers and 72 RBI playing center field in Texas.

Is it more valuable to have an everyday potential superstar in your lineup or an every-fifth-day dominating starting pitcher?
CINCINNATI . When it was over, left-hander Phil Dumatrait fessed up. Yes, he really wanted this one.

He wanted to show the Cincinnati Reds how far he'd come since they cast him aside as a struggling rookie. The proof was in the pitching line: seven innings, two infield hits.

Jason Bay and Xavier Nady homered in support of Dumatrait's statement-making start Thursday night, leading the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 7-2 victory that ended Cincinnati's home winning streak at nine games.

The Pirates salvaged the finale of a three-game series by taking it more than one base at a time. They piled up six doubles and the two homers off a pitching staff that's still out of kilter from a marathon game.

Opposing starter Kyle Lohse had a nearly identical line -- tossing seven innings of four-run, six-hit ball for the Reds, who have lost three in a row. David Weathers (0-1) gave up the final run to take the loss. Adam Dunn, Josh Hamilton and Brandon Phillips all homered in defeat. Phillips' homer was also his first major-league hit.

Bush allowed only three hits in seven innings, retiring 17 consecutive batters after Edwin Encarnacion drove in a run with an infield single in the first inning.
.If you don't think you can do it, you shouldn't be here, that's for sure,. said Orr, who increased his RBI output to a grand total of 20 in 399 career at-bats over four big-league seasons. .You have to believe in yourself, first of all. But Ken Griffey Jr. still has that sweeping home-run swing and he still has a terrific hold on people's imagination. A game-delaying cloudburst was about to cut loose and something striking, something right out of the movies, happened in the rapidly dimming light.

Let the debate go on.

PHOENIX - Scott Hairston hit a game-winning RBI double in the bottom of the 11th inning, as the surging Arizona Diamondbacks edged the Cincinnati Reds, 5-4, at Chase Field.

Conor Jackson scored the deciding run and Chad Tracy hit a three-run homer for Arizona, which has won six in a row. Juan Cruz (2-0) picked up the win after hurling a scoreless ninth. Starter Ed Gonzalez lasted seven innings, yielding four runs on six hits with three strikeouts.

Both offenses went silent after the fourth, sending the game into extra innings deadlocked at 4-4.

Finally, Arizona broke the drought to send its fans home happy.
