The second half, Hooker gave what Coach Sam Simpson called "the first indication that he's almost back."

Olympic organizers intend to "bear down" on costs in the wake of the global financial crisis and do everything possible to avoid overruns on the $17 billion budget for the 2012 Summer Games.

Mayor Boris Johnson appeared before the British Parliament's Olympic watchdog committee Tuesday, five months after he defeated incumbent Ken Livingstone and assumed a central role in planning the games.

Johnson praised organizers for doing a "first-rate job" in "increasingly difficult market circumstances."

"The whole thinking about the Olympics has changed in that market conditions have changed," he said, adding the city will deliver a "fantastic" Olympics while staying within budget.
The financial turmoil is complicating London's ability to secure private funding for key construction projects. Organizers may be forced to use reserves from the government's contingency fund of $1.9 billion to help pay for the athletes' village and a new broadcast and press center.

Gymnasts have to be 16 during the Olympic year to compete.
Zhou declined further comment and referred questions to another member of the association, who was not available. But, Zhou added, the association relies on local authorities for information about its athletes.
The University of Kentucky football is trying to solve its offensive woes before Saturday's pivotal Southeastern Conference game with South Carolina.

Derrick Locke gave his two cents' worth on the Wildcats' problems.

The 5-foot-9, 180-pound sophomore said Monday that the offense hasn't made enough of a commitment to the running game. The suggestion comes on the heels of UK's 17-14 loss to Alabama in which the Cats ran the ball just 20 times for 35 yards.

"Honestly I feel like we're relying too much on the passing game," Locke said. "I don't know if it's Coach not trusting us with the run game. I really don't know, but I feel like the running backs need some more touches. They keep saying we've got to establish the run game. Well, we're really not running. We haven't had a running back that had over 100 yards rushing (in a game) yet. You can't get that with six carries, four carries, three carries. You just can't make it happen.

Kentucky better enjoy staging its Big Blue Madness a week earlier than almost all other programs this year because UK might not be able to circumvent the rule on starting pre-season practice in the future.

The National Association of Basketball Coaches has told the NCAA that it would support a ban on early Madness celebrations. And Jim Haney, the NABC executive director, said on Wednesday that he expects the NCAA to mandate that all Madness celebrations be held on the same date beginning next year.

The NCAA cited Oct. 17 as the date programs can begin pre-season practices this year. Kentucky circumvented that starting point by manipulating another rule which allows coaches to work with their teams for two hours each week from Sept. 15 to Oct. 17. After getting permission from the NCAA, Kentucky decided to save its two hours next week and use them as part of a Madness celebration on Oct. 10.

Illinois also will stage its Madness on Oct. 10, Haney said.

Twenty years ago Hillard Howard was in the midst of guiding Pikeville to three consecutive state football titles. Now he's in the midst of building Letcher County Central's new football program into a winner.

The project is going well, as Letcher Central has won 14 of its last 16 games, including a 3-1 record this season.

When Fleming-Neon, Letcher and Whitesburg consolidated into Letcher Central four years ago, their collective football fortunes were bankrupt. "We started at rock bottom," Howard said, "so I feel pretty good about how far we've come and what we've got now."

The Cougars' success has come through hard work in the weight room and by developing feeder programs at the middle school, freshman and junior varsity levels.

Princess Rooney, the champion older mare of 1984 and winner of the inaugural Breeders' Cup Distaff that same year, was euthanized Tuesday morning.

Princess Rooney suffered from complications of the disease equine protozoal myeloencephalitis, or EPM, which affects the central nervous system. She was 28.

Princess Rooney had been on the Marquis medication course of treatment for EPM, but once the course of treatment ended, the daughter of Verbatim began going downhill again.

"What (the Marquis) ended up doing was slowing down the process, but it was still attacking the central nervous system and the muscles were deteriorating in her hind end," said Matt Howard, general manager of Gentry Brothers Farm, where Princess Rooney resided. "We had to make a decision because we didn't want her to go into any pain and suffering. Our fear was the muscles in her hind end would collapse and we didn't want her to be in pain that way. It's probably the hardest thing I've ever had to do."

The New Orleans Saints committed so many blunders, not even Reggie Bush's record-tying two punt returns for touchdowns could make up for them in a 30-27 loss to the Minnesota Vikings on Monday night.

Gus Frerotte passed for 222 yards and a game-tying touchdown to Bernard Berrian with 7:10 to play, and Ryan Longwell's 30-yard field goal with 13 seconds left gave the Vikings the comeback win.

"This is as good a win as it gets," Vikings coach Brad Childress said. "I don't know if I've ever been involved in one that went that way."

Longwell's game-winning kick was set up by a pass interference call on a long throw to Berrian, who was run into before the ball came down despite being double-covered. That was only the latest gaffe by New Orleans.
Martin Gramatica, who had a field goal blocked and returned 59 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter, missed a 46-yarder that could have given the Saints (2-3) a lead with two minutes to go.

Kentucky racing, like that in many states, lacks basic controls to track or stop betting problems, according to members of a panel appointed to look into wagering security.

"Our wagering system is flawed," said Mike Maloney, a handicapper on the subcommittee of a task force on horse racing appointed by Gov. Steve Beshear.

"The racing public is at a tremendous disadvantage and the average bettor relies on the state racing commission. Today we fall far short of the mark," he said
Maloney said changes are necessary to stop bets from being made after the start of a race, a practice known as "past posting."

Boston Red Sox third baseman Mike Lowell's torn labrum in his right hip forced the team to take him off the ALDS roster, making him ineligible for Game 4 against the Angels and for the ALCS.

Boston wrapped up its five-game series against the Angels in dramatic fashion on Monday, taking Game 4 by a 3-2 decision on Jed Lowrie's ninth-inning RBI single. Lowell, however, will not be available for the Championship Series against the Tampa Bay Rays, which starts in St. Petersburg on Friday.

Lowell, who was hitless in eight at-bats in the series, missed Game 2 due to the hip condition. He has been hampered for the past few months, and recorded just one at-bat in Boston's final 11 regular season games.

In 113 games in the 2008 regular season, Lowell hit .274 with 17 homers and 73 RBI, the lowest marks he has posted in each category since coming over from the Marlins in the trade that also brought Josh Beckett to Boston.

Replacing the third baseman on the roster is infielder Gil Velazquez, who did not play in Monday's Game 4 against Los Angeles. Velazquez's contract was purchased from Triple-A Pawtucket on September 25, and he was 1-for-8 with an RBI in three regular season games for Boston.

The Canadian Grand Prix was dropped from the 2009 calendar on Tuesday, leaving North America without a Formula One race.

Governing body FIA ratified its calendar for the coming season and omitted the Canadian GP, which was first held in 1967. It's the first time since 1987 that the Canadian GP won't be on the F1 schedule.

The inaugural Abu Dhabi GP replaces the Canadian race for 2009, which will feature 18 races, the same as this year.

Contractual problems between Circuit Gilles Villeneuve officials, and commercial rights holder F1 management are believed to have contributed to the decision.
The Canadian race was left off the calendar 21 years ago because of a dispute between local organizers and the F1 over sponsorship. The United States GP was dropped from the F1 schedule last year.

Formula One racing's governing body, the International Automobile Federation (FIA), announced Tuesday an amended schedule for the 2009 season. A provisional schedule was released in June.
With Canada off the schedule for next year, it leaves North America with no F1 events as the U.S. Grand Prix was dropped from the circuit in 2008. The Canadian Grand Prix had been on the F1 schedule each year since 1967, with the exception of 1975 and '87.

The Belgian Grand Prix and the Italian Grand Prix have swapped dates, with the Spa event in Belgium taking place the last weekend in August and the Monza race in Italy running in mid-September.

Three-time NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series champion Jack Sprague has been released as driver of the No.2 Chevrolet, Kevin Harvick Inc. officials announced Monday.

KHI co-owner Kevin Harvick will assume driving duties of the No.2 truck for the October 18th race at the Martinsville Speedway.

"The performance of the No.2 team was not up to either Jack or KHI's standards," Harvick said. "My main goal now is to prepare the team to run for a championship in 2009. I am looking forward to getting behind the wheel in Martinsville. It should be a lot of fun."

Details on the driver lineup for the remainder of the season will be announced at a later date.
Sprague won his titles in 1997, '98 and 2001. He is currently second on the series' all-time winners list with 28, but has yet to record a victory this season.
NASCAR needs to better define its yellow 'out-of-bounds' line rule

Sunday's wild but confusing finish in the Amp Energy 500 at the Talladega Superspeedway has sparked debate about NASCAR's rule that makes it illegal for a driver to advance his position below the yellow-line, or "out-of-bounds" line, at restrictor-plate tracks (Daytona and Talladega).

During the green-white-checkered finish, Tony Stewart held off Dale Earnhardt Inc. drivers Regan Smith and Paul Menard until Smith dipped below the yellow line and passed Stewart just before the finish line.

Smith crossed the line first, but NASCAR ruled his move illegal and awarded Stewart with his first Sprint Cup Series victory of the season.

Shortly after the race, NASCAR defended its decision.

"You cannot improve your position anytime you go below the yellow line," Jim Hunter, NASCAR's vice president of corporate communications, said. "In our judgment, (Smith) improved his position and the penalty for that is a pass thru, so he was moved back to the tail end of the longest line or 18th position. At the driver's meeting, we clearly state that you cannot improve your position by going below the yellow line. We do not feel he was forced below the yellow line."

It was a much-needed win, but it may not matter. Just five weeks into the 2008 season, the 2006 champs are in trouble. It's not just their 2-2 record that leaves them 2 1/2 games behind unbeaten Tennessee in the AFC South, but the way they are playing: badly.

The Minnesota Vikings forced three turnovers and used two big plays by cornerback Antoine Winfield to take a 20-10 halftime lead over the New Orleans Saints on Monday night.

On the first play of the second quarter, Winfield, who already had returned a blocked field goal 59 yards for a touchdown, stripped Drew Brees of the ball on a sack and returned the fumble 9 yards to the Saints 5. Running back Chester Taylor threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to tight end Visanthe Shiancoe on third down to give the Vikings their first lead, 17-10.

New Orleans, which outgained Minnesota 251 yards to 120, threatened to score on its next two possessions before committing a turnover on both. Running back Reggie Bush fumbled at the Minnesota 34 to halt one series. Linebacker Ben Leber ended the second by intercepting a pass that bounced off receiver Lance Moore's hands twice at the Minnesota 11.

The Vikings responded with their first sustained drive of the game, moving 72 yards on 15 plays to set up a 33-yard field goal by Ryan Longwell with four seconds left.
Brees hit wide receiver Devery Henderson over the middle for a 17-yard touchdown on a third-and-10 to give the Saints a 7-0 lead.

Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner says that after this season he will take his closest look yet at retiring from the NFL.

The scary injury to teammate Anquan Boldin, combined with other factors, has led him to give more serious consideration to leaving the game.

"I'm definitely considering retirement more than I ever have before," the 37-year-old quarterback said Monday, "but that doesn't mean it's more than 50 percent or anything like that. I'm just going to consider it."

The comments came after Yahoo.com reported that Warner text messaged his wife Brenda shortly after Boldin's injury on Nov. 28 against the New York Jets, saying he'd decided it was time to retire. She said he meant immediately, but Warner said that wasn't the case.

"There's no question that I texted her and said that I was contemplating and thinking about it because she's wanted me to retire for a couple of years now," Warner said. ". . . It wasn't I was going to retire last week. It was more I'm just really trying to keep this thing in perspective moving forward."

I met an old Cuban boxer once at a Frenchtown bar on St. Thomas. Locals called him "The Champ." It was around two o'clock in the morning when I asked the aging fighter what his career record had been. "One hundred and one hundred," he responded -- and I had no choice but to believe him.

You should have seen the size of The Champ's knuckles.

Minutes later, I found myself resisting the boozy urge to sing along to "Just Like Heaven" while sitting several feet away from The Champ. Still formidable looking in retirement, he didn't have a face that screamed, "Sing as loud as you want. I am also a Cure fan."

Buena Vista Social Club would have been more appropriate, I suppose. Or something bluesy, something spiritual and haunted like Blind Willie Johnson. Something someone who'd been beaten one hundred times could relate to. But also something relatable to someone who'd beaten one hundred men.
My friends had known The Champ when they lived on St. Thomas for a spell after college graduation. They attested to his honesty and told me if he said he'd split 200 fights evenly, he probably did. At least his nose looked like it had seen that many battles.

When Fleming-Neon, Letcher and Whitesburg consolidated into Letcher Central four years ago, their collective football fortunes were bankrupt. "We started at rock bottom," Howard said, "so I feel pretty good about how far we've come and what we've got now."
